This fall City Rain was called in to get the irrigation system together for the new Green Plate Special garden location on 25th Ave. S and S. Walker St. in the Mt. Baker neighborhood/ Rainier Valley. Ironically it’s just a few hundred feet from a McDonald’s. Green Plate Special gets middle school aged kids interested in healthy food via hands on growing and cooking food. How cool is that? In order for cool kids to grow cool food, you’re gonna have to call the coolest irrigation guys around- which they did, and we jumped in with the trencher.
We got busy with mainline, wire, and hose bibb zones to each planter location shown here. Our stuff is underground. Unfortunately some villains stole all of our brass faucets the first night after the job was completed. There will be a secure fence in place soon. Anyway, the hose bibbs will have drip lines attached laid in each bed. These lines can easily be removed and re-attached for harvesting and planting. The hose bibbs are automated by a central controller, so groups of beds can water at different schedules. We also installed four frost-free hydrants on a pressurized line, at four corners of the property, for anytime use.
On Sunday, Oct. 27, they threw a party and invited the neighborhood as well as the contractors. It was a lucky rain-less day with food and drink. I had some beers and wood-fired oven pizza.
Here’s Craig and I at the beverage table.
